When a tooth is missing a bridge can be made, using the tooth on either side of the gap as fixed support for the false tooth. The teeth which will support the bridge are trimmed down by the dentist, an impression (mould) is taken of the prepared teeth and then the dental technician in the laboratory constructs the bridge , most commonly of metal covered with tooth coloured porcelain. The bridge is then fitted (using special dental cement) onto the prepared teeth.

Sometimes a bridge can be supported by bonding a metal wing to the tooth beside the gap (or to the tooth on each side of gap). This type of adhesive bridge is often called a "Maryland" bridge.
