What is Teeth Whitening?
Yellow teeth are a common concern for many people. They can lead to low confidence and self-conscious behaviour. Teeth whitening is a dental treatment where we can lighten the teeth by removing stubborn stains and discolourations present on them, both superficially and intrinsically.
Teeth get discoloured over time because of many reasons. It could be because of stains from food and drinks, tobacco smoking or certain medication.
It is natural for our teeth to become more yellow coloured as we age. Thankfully we can reverse this somewhat by undergoing a course of tooth whitening
At our practice, we favour the nighttime home tray bleaching system. This is a gentle, effective, least invasive and safe way to achieve a remarkable improvement in the colour of your natural teeth.
Our teeth whitening treatment effectively uses custom-fit bleaching trays and dentist-prescribed bleaching gels to whiten your teeth with 1-2 hours of daily use and lasts up to a year. Most people prefer to use this overnight while sleeping
Stains that your dentist cannot remove with teeth whitening treatments can be treated with either dental crowns or veneers.
Dental Crowns: These are caps that fit over the trimmed tooth and cover all the tooth surfaces. You can mask your stained or discoloured teeth by choosing a dental crown with a lighter shade. Click here to read more
Dental Veneers: These are thin shells of tooth-coloured materials that your dentist will attach to your front teeth. Click here to read more

What Happens With Teeth Whitening Treatment?
At the first visit, we take an impression (mould) of your upper and lower teeth, and use these to construct thin custom fit trays. At your second visit we show you how to use the trays with the whitening gel. Most people choose to do the whitening overnight. You can choose instead to wear the trays (with gel inserted) for 1-2 hours during the day (perhaps while sitting watching television, for example).
Depending on individual cases, you may have to wear them overnight or for a couple of hours daily, for 2-3 weeks.
You will usually start seeing a difference within a week of starting your at-home teeth whitening treatment, but complete results will be seen after 2-3 weeks. There are some cases where it is necessary to persevere for a few months (for example with teeth that have Tetracycline discoloration). With good oral care, you can enjoy the lasting effects of your dentist-prescribed at-home teeth whitening for over a year. The whitening should be “topped up” for a couple of nights, maybe once a year – or more frequently , depending on lifestyle & dietary habits.

frequently Asked Questions
Yes, teeth whitening trays can help lighten the shade of your teeth. Your dentist will provide a whitening gel to add to the trays. Following the instructions given, this is the safest, most gentle and most reliable method for achieving a good enhancement of the natural appearance of your own teeth.
Teeth whitening is not a permanent procedure. It generally stays for six months to two years, depending on the foods you eat and the oral hygiene you follow. Avoid highly staining foods like tea, coffee, wine, sauces, etc. To help maintain the newly whitened teeth, we recommend “topping up” for a couple of nights every so often (for some people this is once every 6 months, for others once a year).
Yellow teeth could be due to a variety of reasons. Depending on the cause of the yellowness, specific treatments can whiten the teeth. For extrinsic stains caused by food items, tobacco products, or plaque build-up, outside teeth whitening can be done. Similarly, if staining is from the inside of the tooth (for instance because of Tetracycline discolouration), intrinsic teeth whitening involving a longer period (some months) with the same method will eventually achieve results.
Teeth Bleaching: When done professionally by a dentist, tooth bleaching can be a safe and effective treatment. However, if done incorrectly, bleaching can expose too much of the tooth’s inner layer (dentin) to the environment, making it sensitive to hot and cold. With the wrong technique, the bleaching chemicals can also irritate the gums.
Teeth Whitening: Yes, teeth whitening done according to the dentist’s instructions is the safest method, with many years of research confirming thi
In most cases, professional teeth whitening will last anywhere between six months to two years, depending on your eating habits and oral hygiene. Your whitened teeth are susceptible to stains from pigmented food such as tea, coffee, ketchup, wine, beets etc. So to make your teeth whitening treatment last longer, drink lots of water, eat non-staining foods and brush immediately after your meals.
If you have sensitivity after teeth whitening, you can ask your dentist to prescribe desensitizing toothpaste or gel. Avoid rinsing the mouth with cold water, and instead, use lukewarm water.
Teeth bleaching: If you opt for at-home bleaching trays, you can expect to see results after 2-3 weeks of use. We recommend you wear the trays for a few hours every day during this time, most people find it more convenient to wear the trays overnight.
Teeth Whitening: Teeth whitening using home bleaching trays will get results within a few weeks of wearing the tray for the designated time every day.
Tooth Bleaching: You should avoid teeth staining drinks like tea, coffee, wine etc. while bleaching your teeth. Also, refrain from having acidic drinks like fruit juices, fizzy drinks, and alcohol, which can worsen your tooth sensitivity.
Teeth Whitening: You can enjoy foods devoid of natural or artificial colourings like white rice, white bread, lean meats, fish, potatoes, cauliflowers, egg whites, cheese etc. Avoid pigmented sauces and condiments like turmeric, soy sauce, ketchup, mustard etc.

- Why Choose Us
Our practice is based on providing a high standard of modern dentistry in a friendly, professional manner. It is our mission to help our patients maintain their teeth and a healthy mouth for their lifetime.
Our entire team is committed to this ideal. As a result, a high percentage of our business is from returning patients and referrals of their family and friends. We welcome and are grateful for these referrals.
It has been normal for a long time in modern dentistry to sterilise instruments after use and to clean and disinfect surfaces.
With the current Covid-19 pandemic we are paying particular attention to our normal cross-infection practices, but in addition, we are keeping the practice well ventilated (it may feel cold) and we use a special Fogging machine with Hypochlorous acid (HOCL) which is an all-natural antimicrobial agent made from salt and water by an electrolysis unit. Fogging of each surgery is carried out between patients after any treatment involving an aerosol.
To reduce aerosol production during procedures with the dentist we most often use a little device called a rubber dam —.50 this isolates the immediate teeth we are working with & protects the back of mouth. During hygienist treatment we are using an extra suction device outside of the mouth, this also reduces aerosol production.
We offer modern dentistry in a friendly professional caring environment.
The practice is owned & directed by Miriam Kenny and as the business owner and the principal healthcare professional, I am primarily interested in providing evidence-based dental healthcare. This means my priority is to help my dental patients to maintain their own natural teeth in a healthy mouth for their lifetime.
We can help improve your smile – we offer a range of options depending on what is most appropriate for you, from tooth whitening to composite bonding to ceramic veneers, crowns and bridges.
